Hi Steven. Thanks for writing to us. This is a great question.

We teach that you are saved by Grace, not by obeying the Ten Commandments however, you must still obey the Ten Commandments.

The Ten Commandments is the Mosaic law set out by God in Exodus 20. These moral laws have been the basis of Christian living for 2000 years. Laws of the land were built on these foundations also. These Ten Commandments govern and shape right and wrong behavior as well as character, and they will never go away. They are necessary to please God and necessary for man’s mutual existence.

Jesus upheld and cited obedience to the Ten Commandments throughout the New Testament. Listen closely to what Jesus says in Matthew 5:17 “Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill”. In the next verses He goes on to say “For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled. Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven”. This is coming from Jesus Christ Himself.

There are several references to keeping the Commandments throughout the New Testament however, the final book of the Bible makes it clear that obedience to the Commandments is still required. In Revelation 12:17 faithful members of His Church are those “who keep the commandments of God”. Revelation 22:14 teaches “Blessed are those who do His commandments, that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter through the gates into the city”.

Lastly understand that good works and obedience to the Ten Commandments DOES NOT bring Salvation to anyone. We are saved only by grace and only through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Only through His blood can we find Salvation and when we do, know that we have been saved by Grace, not the Ten Commandments, but upholding the Ten Commandments gives us the status of Blessed. We should strive to uphold them. If anyone will contest the scriptures above be wary. This answer is not what I ‘think’ but I have shown you what the Scriptures say. The Scriptures are the only truth! This teaching should be central to all Believers regardless of Denomination. Hope this answered your question.
